Hangman is the word game most people learned on a chalkboard: a row of blanks, a pile of guesses, and a drawing that grows with every miss. Guess the word before the drawing is finished. This version picks words from seven topics, has three levels, and lets two people play on one screen with their own secret word.

How to play

The blanks show how many letters the word has, and the label above them tells you the topic.

  • Guess a letter by typing it or tapping it on the on-screen keyboard.
  • A right guess fills in every place that letter appears, and its key turns green.
  • A wrong guess greys out the key and adds a part to the drawing.

Find every letter to win. Run out of lives and the word is revealed. New word starts another round straight away, and your streak of words solved in a row is shown under the title.

Levels and topics

  • Easy: 10 lives. The gallows is drawn first, then the figure.
  • Medium: 8 lives.
  • Hard: 6 lives, the classic game: head, body, two arms and two legs.

Pick a topic from the menu: Animals, Food, Countries, Sports, Jobs, Nature or Home. Mixed draws a word from any of them and shows which topic it came from. Every word list is hand-picked and family-friendly.

Hangman for 2 players

Choose 2 Players and the game asks for a secret word. Player 1 types a word or a short phrase, adds a clue if they like, and presses Start while Player 2 looks away. The word stays hidden as dots while it is typed. Player 2 then guesses on the same screen, and the next round swaps roles. Spaces in a phrase are shown as gaps, so only the letters need guessing.

How to get better

Most English words share a handful of letters. Open with E and then the other vowels, move on to T, N, S, R and L, and leave rare letters like J, Q, X and Z until the pattern points to them. Look at the shape of the word too: a blank between two known letters often has only a few possibilities.

How to get a high score

  1. Start with vowels. E, A, O and I appear in most words, so one of them almost always hits.
  2. Then try the common consonants. T, N, S, R and L show up far more often than J, Q, X or Z.
  3. Read the shape. A short word with a double letter, or a word ending in two blanks, narrows things down fast.
  4. Use the topic. Knowing the word is an animal or a country rules out most of the dictionary.
  5. Save hints for the end. A hint costs a life, so it is worth most when you are down to one or two unknown letters.

Questions

How do you play hangman?

A secret word is shown as a row of blanks. Guess one letter at a time. If the letter is in the word, every copy of it appears; if not, another part of the drawing is added. Fill in the whole word before the drawing is finished to win.

How many wrong guesses do you get?

Easy gives you 10, drawing the gallows first and then the figure. Medium gives 8 and Hard gives 6, the classic head, body, two arms and two legs. The counter under the title always shows how many lives are left.

Can I play hangman with 2 players?

Yes. Choose 2 Players. Player 1 types a secret word or short phrase, with an optional clue, while Player 2 looks away. Then Player 2 guesses on the same screen. Swap roles for the next round.

What topics are there?

Animals, Food, Countries, Sports, Jobs, Nature and Home, or Mixed to draw from all of them. Every word is a common, family-friendly word, so the game suits classrooms too.

How do hints work?

Hint fills in one letter you have not found yet, everywhere it appears, and costs one life. You cannot use it on your last life.

Is hangman good for learning?

It is a classic spelling game. Every guess makes you think about which letters go together in English, and the topics build vocabulary around one theme at a time.
